SYD:B Creative Academies

SYD:B Creative Academy was developed as the Brighton based sibling to Lee Smikle’s established London based Shoreditch Youth Dance Company (SYD), as a programme which aims to nurture the creativity and talent of aspiring young dancers. The academies follow the academic year, with weekly training sessions hosted at Smikle Dance Studio. In addition, Academy students will have the opportunity to attend training Intensives in order to get stronger physically, more confident in themselves and to nourish their creativity. 

WEEKLY SESSIONS 

Students in our Creative Academies are required to attend sessions each weekend which are composed of technique classes and creativity sessions. They will participate in non-syllabus Contemporary dance technique classes; sessions may sometimes include Ballet technique classes, mindfulness and yoga/pilates classes to aid in their strength and conditioning. Afterwards, in creative choreography sessions students will be guided in learning choreographic techniques, drawing inspiration from a range of mediums, both figurative and physical. In collaboration with their peers, teachers and guest choreographers, their creative muscles will be strengthened.

WHO IS THIS FOR 

We provide three Academy programmes to suit students from the ages of 10-18 years old. 

FEES

The fees for autumn term 2022 range from £225 - £355.

A place in our academies are by audition only. Auditions for SYD:B Creative Academies are closed for the 2022/2023 academic year, please get in touch via email to enquire about late entry.

SYD:B PRE-ACADEMY - SATURDAY 3:15PM-5:45PM

SYD:B Pre-Academy is suitable for our youngest group of students from 10 to 12 years old. Students in the Pre-Academy are recommended to have a basic knowledge of contemporary dance technique, or have attended other dance classes consistently. 

SYD:B JUNIOR ACADEMY - SATURDAY 9:30AM-2:30PM

Our SYD:B Junior Academy students are between the ages of 13 and 15 years old. Many students in our Junior Academy have not participated in pre-vocational training but must have attended contemporary dance technique classes or have a significant knowledge of other complimentary dance styles. 

SYD:B SENIOR ACADEMY - SUNDAY 11AM-3:45PM

The SYD:B Senior Academy is right for those who are between 16 and 18 years old and considering a career in dance or the performing arts. They must have a significant knowledge of contemporary dance techniques. We may encourage many of our older students to attend other pre-vocational programmes alongside their training with Smikle Dance Project, such as Pre-Vocational courses with Rambert, NSCD or our very own BATCH training programme.
